Femboy

Femboy is an informal term for a male person whose appearance or manner is conventionally feminine. In adult usage, it often describes a man who enjoys feminine clothing, makeup, styling or a feminine overall presentation.[1][2]

A styled presentation combining a pink outfit, makeup, a pastel wig and accessories. These are examples of visual choices, rather than a required uniform.

The word is used as a self-description, an online aesthetic and an adult-media label. It can concern everyday self-expression as well as sexual presentation; those contexts overlap but are not identical.[2]

A femboy can be gay, bisexual, straight or have another orientation. The term concerns gender expression rather than specifying who someone is attracted to.[3]

Appearance and style

Femboy presentation can involve skirts, dresses, crop tops, stockings, nail polish, eyeliner, lipstick, hair styling or jewelry. It can also combine feminine elements with clothing usually marketed to men.[3]

Makeup, hair accessories and clothing can work together to create a feminine presentation without a dress or a complete costume.

Androgynous styling combines or softens features conventionally read as masculine and feminine. Feminine presentation can be more pronounced, but the words do not define a measurable boundary between two body types.

Body shape and styling are separate features. A slim build may accompany the aesthetic, but the dictionary definition does not specify a height, weight or muscle-size requirement.[1]

Hair length, visible body hair and makeup are also separate choices. Long hair is one possible styling element, while short hair can be combined with feminine clothes or accessories.[3]

A photograph can show clothing, hair and cosmetics. It cannot reliably distinguish natural hair from a wig or grooming from naturally sparse body hair in every case. It also does not establish the person's own identity label.

Expression, identity and orientation

Three concepts help explain the term:

A man can present femininely while identifying as a man. Other people who use the word femboy may also describe themselves as nonbinary or transgender. The label alone does not supply a complete account of someone's gender.[3]

The same distinction applies to attraction. A feminine outfit does not turn heterosexuality into homosexuality, and being gay does not require a feminine appearance.

Femboy is also not the name of a medical transition or a treatment. Clothing and cosmetics can change presentation without establishing anything about hormone use, surgery or reproductive anatomy.

These terms can overlap in a person's experience, but they answer different questions about appearance, expression or identity.

Twink and femme

A twink is primarily associated with a slim, youthful-looking appearance. Femboy emphasizes feminine presentation. A person can use both terms, but a slim man need not dress femininely, and feminine presentation is not restricted to a slim build.

Femme is a broader term for feminine presentation or mannerisms. Femboy is a more specific self-description or style label; it should not be automatically applied to every feminine man.[5]

Cross-dressing and drag

Cross-dressing concerns wearing clothing culturally associated with another gender. It can overlap with femboy presentation, while the latter can also involve hairstyle, manner and an overall aesthetic rather than a particular garment.[3]

Drag is an art or performance involving gender presentation. Feminine everyday styling and a drag performance can use some of the same tools, such as makeup and wigs, while serving different purposes.[6]

Transgender and sissy

Transgender concerns gender identity in relation to the sex assigned at birth. A trans woman is a woman; calling her a femboy can misidentify her. Conversely, a man's feminine expression does not by itself mean he is a trans woman.[4][6]

Sissy has both insulting and self-chosen adult uses. In some adult contexts it includes feminization or humiliation themes. Femboy can describe feminine self-expression without those themes, so the two words should not be treated as automatic synonyms.[5]

Sex, relationships and roles

A feminine presentation can be attractive to a partner, just as other styles can be. It may be part of someone's ordinary appearance, something they enjoy in intimacy, or both. Enjoying the presentation does not establish a particular sexual activity.[2]

Top, bottom and versatile concern sexual roles or preferences. Dominant and submissive concern a different aspect of an encounter. Femboy describes neither of those things by itself.

A partner's interests therefore need to be understood separately from their clothes. The same outfit can be worn by people with different boundaries, relationship goals and preferred activities.

Everyday expression and adult media

The word has both sexual and nonsexual uses. Dictionary.com's usage summary distinguishes everyday feminine expression from its use as a pornography category.[2]

In adult media, femboy can be combined with other labels describing appearance or sexual role. This is a publisher's classification of material, rather than a reliable description of every person who uses the word outside that setting.

The images on this page come from adult media and illustrate selected styling choices. Their outfits and settings should not be read as a survey of how femboys usually dress or live.

Using the term

The word combines feminine and boy. Its history includes insulting usage, while some people use it positively for themselves. Context and the person's own preference matter when deciding whether it is welcome.[1][2]

Femboi is an alternative spelling encountered online. Its associations can vary, so a spelling alone should not be used to infer someone's identity.[2]

The adult examples here concern adults. The word's youthful associations and a person's styling do not establish chronological age.
