Outer Labia

Outer labia are the two fleshy outer folds of the pussy. The anatomical name is labia majora. They run from the mons pubis toward the perineum and form the visible outer borders of the vulva, surrounding the inner labia, clitoris, urethral opening and vaginal opening.^[1]

In everyday and adult language, outer labia may also be called outer lips or outer pussy lips. The broader expression pussy lips can refer to either the outer or inner labia.

What do the outer labia actually look like?

The outer labia can be flat, narrow, thick, rounded or visibly puffy. Their size varies substantially: ACOG notes that the width of the labia majora can range from about one-quarter of an inch to two inches.^[2]

The two sides do not have to be identical. Vulvas naturally vary in size,a shape and color, and some degree of asymmetry is normal.^[2]

Why can the outer lips look puffy?

Unlike the thin inner labia, the outer labia contain a substantial amount of fatty tissue. This gives them their soft and sometimes rounded appearance.^[1]

The amount of fatty tissue varies between women. In a study of 657 women aged 15–84, labia majora length showed a small positive correlation with BMI (r = 0.150), meaning body size can influence their appearance but explains only part of the variation.^[3]

This fuller appearance is what adult slang may describe as a puffy pussy. The term usually refers to prominent, rounded outer labia rather than unusually large inner labia.

Outer labia can hide the inner anatomy

When the outer labia meet closely in the middle, they can hide most of the inner labia, clitoral hood and vaginal entrance. This contributes to the closed-looking appearance commonly described as an innie pussy.

Large or full outer labia do not automatically mean that the inner labia are small. A woman can have substantial inner labia that remain hidden until the outer lips are spread apart.

The same pussy can look different in different positions

Body position changes how much of the vulva is visible. With the legs together, the outer labia may press against each other and conceal nearly everything between them.

Opening the legs, squatting or manually spreading the outer labia can separate them and expose the inner labia, clitoris and vaginal opening. Photographs can therefore make the same anatomy look considerably more "open" or "closed" depending on positioning.

Hair grows mainly on the outside

After puberty, the outer surface of the labia majora normally grows pubic hair and contains hair follicles, sebaceous glands and sweat glands. The inner-facing surface is smoother and usually hairless.^[1]

Shaving therefore changes the appearance of the outer labia particularly strongly. Without hair, their full outline, skin texture and symmetry become much easier to see.

Outer labia vary in color and texture

The skin of the outer labia does not have to match the surrounding skin. A dermatology review describes mild redness as physiological in fair skin and diffuse symmetrical hyperpigmentation as normal in darker skin types.^[4]

The outer surface can also show ordinary skin features such as follicles, small bumps, wrinkles or differences in pigmentation. A perfectly smooth and uniformly colored appearance is not an anatomical requirement.

Do the outer labia swell during sexual arousal?

Anatomy references describe the labia majora as becoming engorged during sexual arousal.^[1]

However, an MRI study of 11 premenopausal and 8 postmenopausal women found clear arousal-related changes in the inner labia, clitoris and vestibular bulbs, but no marked change in the size or blood-related enhancement of the labia majora.^[5]

Visible swelling of the outer lips may therefore be less pronounced or less consistent than vascular changes in the inner genital tissues.

Can touching the outer labia feel sexual?

Yes. The labia majora have sensory innervation, including branches of the pudendal and ilioinguinal nerves.^[1] Touch, rubbing or pressure on them can therefore be felt clearly and can be pleasurable for some women.

In a study of 62 healthy, sexually active women aged 21–60, ratings of labial and introital sexual sensitivity were similar regardless of whether women described their labia as small, average-sized or large.^[6]

This means that looking at a woman's outer lips cannot tell a partner how sensitive they are or what kind of touch she will enjoy.

The outer labia are not the main source of sexual wetness

During sexual activity, the outer labia can become coated with vaginal lubrication and other genital fluids.

Visible wetness across the outer lips therefore does not show where the fluid was produced.

Age and body changes can alter their appearance

The outer labia can change during a woman's lifetime. Puberty, pregnancy, aging and menopause can all alter the appearance of the vulva.^[2]

After menopause, lower estrogen levels and loss of tissue volume can make the outer labia appear thinner or less full. Conversely, greater subcutaneous fat can make them more prominent.^[4]

Bigger outer lips do not mean a different vagina

The size of the outer labia does not show how wide or tight the vagina is. The outer lips are external skin-and-fat folds, while vaginal tightness depends on different tissues and muscles deeper inside the body.

Can outer labia reveal sexual experience?

The appearance of the outer labia does not reliably reveal how much sex a woman has had. In a study of 50 premenopausal women, measurements of the external genitals varied widely but showed no statistically significant association with history of sexual activity.^[7]

Outer labia can be visible through clothing

Because the outer labia form much of the external volume of the vulva, tight clothing can sometimes show their outline or the central cleft between them. The familiar slang term camel toe describes this clothing-created outline rather than a specific type of labial anatomy.

How visible it becomes depends on the woman's anatomy as well as the cut, tension and position of the clothing.
